It's not hard to find Stowe. Since the ski area shares its name with the town, there's no confusion about where you're headed, and the "Ski capital of the East" is an easy, enjoyable trip from just about anywhere.

Located in north-central Vermont, we're 40 minutes from Vermont's largest airport, 15 minutes from Interstate 89, and 15 minutes from the train station. Clear signs, light traffic, well-maintained roads, and pretty countryside make it a pleasant drive from the airport or other northeastern locations..

Traveling by car or bus Guests from the north, south, east, or west can take major interstates or highways almost to Stowe's doorstep. Check Vermont road conditions.

Directions to Stowe Mountain Resort

From Burlington, Vermont
Take Interstate 89 South. Follow 89S until you get to exit 10 (Stowe / Waterbury exit). Make a left at the end of the exit ramp; this is route 100N. Follow this for 11 miles until you reach your first stop sign. This is the center of Stowe Village. Make a left at the stop sign onto route 108N, and follow this for approximately 6 miles until you reach the resort. Welcome!

Traveling by plane
Vermonters are used to dealing with snow, so our major airport has an outstanding open ratio of over 99:1 in the winter. Burlington International Airport offers plenty of flights nonstop from major cities like Philadelphia, Chicago, Pittsburgh, New York, Boston, and Washington. Major carriers at Burlington International Airport include Continental Airlines, The Delta Connection, United Airlines, and US Airways.

From the airport, it's just a 40-minute, mostly Interstate drive to Stowe. Taxi service and car rentals are available at the airport (we offer preferred rates on Thrifty rental cars with ski racks, all-weather tires, and unlimited mileage), and some lodges provide special transportation for groups.

And if you get lost just look at any of the beautiful scenery around and BREATHE you are in Vermont and it will all be ok!

There are two winter storm heading toward Vermont, one is here currently and since this morning we have picked up 1-2 inches of snow. They other one will show up tomorrow! This is just in time for the long Martin Luther King weekend!

We're watching it very closely, but current projections for Stowe show anywhere from 5"- 12" from the combination of the storms by Saturday morning.

More lifts and more trails are in our plans as we head towards the holiday week-- today the Sunny Spruce Quad has opened for the first time this season, servicing skiing & riding on the Side Street trail. Thanks to our snowmakers and mountain operations team, in the past four days we have opened 4 additional lifts and 5 new trails!

Currently, we have 9 lifts and 20 trails open, by next week we plan to have 11 lifts and 29 trails open and we are also aiming for the Midway Terrain Park! We can't wait for next week and hope to see you on the slopes soon!

Evolution Stowe

Greetings Skiers and Riders!

If you have not been here yet this season you are in for a real treat. We got a facelift over the summer. There is a brand new FourRunner Quad (super fast), a new website (easier to navigate) and a new pass system(faster to get onto the lifts). This new system is known as Evolution Stowe or RFID.

I love to dance through the lift line and always have a friendly hello for the podium attendant. Also, it is so much nicer than having to pull out your pass every run.

Q: What is RFID?

A: Radio Frequency Identification.

Q: What is an Evolution Stowe RFID Card – Referred to as Evolution Stowe Card?

A: The Evolution Stowe Card has a small RFID tag integrated into the card. When you pass through the lift line, this tag will register and open the lift access gate automatically. So basically you ski or ride up to the gate, do a dance to make the podium attendant laugh and keep on going through. If you get the timing right and there is not a line you can even pass right through without stopping.

Q: But what to do with this new pass and how should I carry it?

A: You should carry your Evolution Stowe Card in a separate pocket away from your cell phone, iPod, or any foil wrapped items such as gum wrappers,etc. The Evolution Stowe Card should be carried in the “strike zone” or on your person above your knees and below your shoulders. And as I stated before I prefer dancing up to the gate.

Q: Why did we switch to this?

A: There are many guest benefits to RFID technology. Once you have received an Evolution Stowe Card, you will be able to reload the card online at any time of day, without having to wait in any ticket lines. For both ticketholders and pass holders, the Evolution Stowe Card will last for years, this way you can simply purchase/reload your ticket or pass [in future years] and reuse your existing card. AND if you are purchasing day tickets only the price is reduced to $69 for a day ticket if you reload online!!! That is a savings of over $20!

Demo ‘til you drop. All day, area ski and snowboard industry reps will be showing off the hottest and latest gear of the season from 8am - 3pm. Then tromp around at 10am and 1pm with the Nordic Barn and Umiak Outfitters backcountry gear clinics. Join us in the Mansfield Den for an apres ski hangout and raffle drawing.

Cold Weather Dances

Hey Snow Enthusiasts!

Start doing those snow and cold weather dances! We need them. All of us here are running out of steam, we have been wearing our PJ’s backwards and inside out for several months and apparantly the Snow Gods have caught on to our plan.

So sleep with your pajamas on inside out and do anything else that has worked for you in the past. GAME ON!

Here are some other ideas which I have not tried all of them but I hear they work just as well too:

1.Wear pajamas inside out and backwards

2.Flush ice cubes down the toilet

3.Put a spoon under your pillow

4. Say “I want it to snow, I want it to snow, I want it to snow…” As you fall asleep

5.Run around the kitchen table five times

6.Try not to touch the floor as you leap into bed

7.Sleep on the opposite side of the bed

8.Hang a wool sock over your bed

9.Sleep with your window opened an inch

Hey Everyone,We are about to head into December and what better than to plan a trip to the Spruce Peak Performing Arts Center!

I am extermley excited for the showing on December 3rd A Charlie Brown Christmas with David Benoit. David Benoit is a five time Grammy-nominated pianist and his quartet will play a show full of holiday songs and arrangements made famous by Vince Guaraldi on the Charlie Brown Christmas TV specials.

The evening will also feature children from the Stowe Elementary School Chorus singing during the show with Mr. Benoit and company.

Benoit electrified the jazz world when he released a version of “The Peanuts Theme” which became a #1 hit on jazz radio. He has performed The Peanuts Piano Concerto with several orchestras as part of his tribute to Charles Schulz and the music of Vince Guaraldi. In 2000 he released his GRP tribute recording Here’s To You, Charlie Brown: 50 Great Years. In 2005, Benoit released 40 Years: A Charlie Brown Christmas, featuring Toni Braxton, Norman Brown, Chaka Khan, Dave Koz, the Rippingtons, Vanessa Williams, and others.

Hey Everyone!What a great day today has been! We opened with a snow storm and freshies on top of the lovely work from the snow makers. It made for variable conditions but at the same time lots of fun! After taking one preseason ride up the NEW FourRunner Quad today's performance was nothing but the best! Everything went off smoothly and everyone seemed happy to be skiing and riding again!
Some early risers were in the parking lot before I got in just after 5am!

Opening Day!

Hey everyone! Welcome to a snowy first day of the 2011-2012 winter season! We have picked up a fresh 6-7" of new snow overnight and it continues to snow heavily here at the mountain! Our brand new FourRunner Quad will open at 8am, following a brief opening ceremony, and will provide top-to-bottom skiing & riding today. Open trails will include Upper Lord, Lord, Upper Ridgeview, Ridgeview, North Slope, Lower North Slope & Centerline for a total of 2.7 miles and over 2,000 vertical feet of terrain. All of our terrain has been groomed with the exception of Centerline. We also have two terrain features set-up on Ridgeview. Snowmaking will be in progress today on Upper Lord, Lord and Ridgeview. I am still running around getting photos for you all this morning so stay tuned through Twitter and Facebook and check back again later to see what opening day looks like!

Due to the recent unseasonably mild weather, our new projected opening day is Wednesday, November 23 at 8:00am (weather permitting). We're planning to open top-to-bottom with the debut of our brand new FourRunner Quad on Mount Mansfield, Vermont's Highest Peak. Weather forecasts are calling for cold temperatures to return later tonight and last through the first half of this weekend, so we hope to have the snow guns running again by tomorrow morning. I got to take a spin on the FourRunner Quad today and I wanted you to enjoy the ride as much as I did!

Hey Everyone!We have snow! Let the games begin! Snowmaking started two nights ago with a little help from Mother Nature [just a dusting though]. It [hopefully] won't be long until we ride the new FourRunner. It is in progress down to what's known as the rock garden near the top of Sunrise...portions of Lord and Ridgeview are getting plastered with snow right now. It's a beautiful sight from the base to see the guns raging up there. Hang in there opening day is scheduled for 1 week from today November 19th! Keep doing those colder temperature and snow dances! Enjoy a few photos I got of the mountain this morning!

The past two weeks we have been seeing more winter type weather. We had a little snow from the Nor' Easter a week back and the past several evenings we have had some very nice frosts! Enjoy this video of our transition from fall to winter!

Why Vermont?

Many people ask me why Vermont? I have lived in many states and have chosen Vermont. Why not choose Vermont, I reply. Every single season is beautiful even when it rains. Vermont has a camaraderie unlike any other place I have lived; neighbors are there for each other, you recognize people around town and people always smile and say hi.

Vermonters have a passion driven behind everything they do and it is know as Vermont Strong. Vermont Strong is when neighbors, friends, strangers get together to help others out in need, as we saw after tropical storm Irene.

There is this strange season called stick season, yup stick season. It is in the fall after 95 percent of the leaves have blown away and there is no snow in the mountains. It is this dull grey world at first glance, but once you see it in the early morning or later afternoon light it is beautiful again.

You know winter is right around the corner when you step outside and smell a wood fire. It lingers in the air like a cake fresh out of the oven and never leaves your nostrils.

There is endless amounts of fun activities in the winter including, skiing, sledding, snowball fights and anything else that makes us adults feel and act like kids again. Once that white stuff called snow begins falling from the skies and sticking to the ground the fun begins.

We have dairy. Yup, Cheddar cheese and Ben & Jerry's ice cream. What else could you ask for in your diet? I just ate a pint of What a Cluster!

And if dairy isn't your fancy come try some of our beer. The Long Trail Brewing Company has released a limited release for a new brew called “Goodnight Irene”. The proceeds from sales of this beer will be distributed throughout multiple organizations working towards Irene relief. What's cooler than that?

So why not come visit us here in the great state of Vermont. We love visitors and in less than a month Stowe will be open for skiing!

Baby its getting colder outside in the month of October! Last week we had our first big frost two nights is a row and then temperatures warmed back up just in time for Columbus Day weekend and Fall foliage. Foliage is in its prime this year and I have been finding every excuse possible to be outside enjoying it!

From Hiking Hell Brook Trail to The Chin, which is the summit of Mount Mansfield, to morning mountain bike rides and walking my dog along the Stowe Quiet Path the foliage is everywhere and a fiery blaze through the trees. I have put together a few different video segments of my last week’s worth of adventures and driving around to check out the foliage so I hope you enjoy!

Looking for a hike check out the Green Mountain Club online to see what is open. My personal recommendations: Stowe Pinnacle and Sterling Pond for Shorter Day Hikes and for slightly longer hikes, Mount Hunger and The Long Trail South form Rt. 108 to The Chin. Not much of a hiker? Take the toll road to the summit and traverse across Mansfield to see some stunning views and enjoy the foliage from up high.

Facts about Fall Foliage:
1. As a general rule, you can be assured of viewing brilliant colors from the last week of September through the first two weeks of October in Stowe, Vermont.
2. June 21st, the longest day of the year, is the day that begins the chemical changes in the trees that months later produce the vibrant hues of reds, gold's and yellows we see and know as foliage!
3. Shorter days and colder temperatures cause chlorophyll (the green pigment found in leaves) to move from the leaf to the branch. The hues of yellow and orange (that were always present) then become visible.
4. Warmer fall days produce sugar in the leaves, which is then trapped in the leaf when the temperature drops at night. As the sugar accumulates, the leaves turn hues of red.
5. Leaves of the sugar maple, red maple, red oak, sweet gum, black gum and sourwood, typically turn hues of red. However, they can produce yellow leaves as well.
6. Leaves of birch, elm, poplar, redbud and hickory, always turn hues of gold & yellow.
7. Leaves of the Sumac tree produce a maroon color.
8. The weather plays a large role in foliage...Cool nights and warm fall days, a wet spring and a temperate summer (not too hot, cold, rainy, etc.) all make for a fantastic leaf-peeping season

Hey Guys! Sorry for the hiatus, Vermont was hit pretty badly by Hurricane Irene and I have been busy helping out. BUT I wanted to let you all know that Stowe had no damage and is still open for business! We are so excited up here for fall foliage season and with cooler temperatures in the air skiing is on our minds again! To see Stowe and the surrounding countryside at its most spectacular, visit us this autumn. Frosty mornings give way to cool, crisp days - perfect for enjoying the outdoors. The colorful hillsides - ablaze with red, orange, and gold, and it takes my breath away very single year!

But please don't ask when the leaves will be at their peak. The timing depends on temperature, sunlight, and rainfall amounts. This makes the timing of the peak a little different from year to year and impossible to predict exactly, although it's the subject of endless speculation in these parts. As a general rule, you can be assured of viewing brilliant colors from the last week of September through the first two weeks of October. And we hope you get a chance to drive through the Notch and take a ride up the gondola or hike Mt. Mansfield to see the foliage at it's finest.

Saturday August 27th Kevin Eubanks of the Tonight Show will be at Spruce Peak Performing Arts Center at 8pm!

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to race to the top of Vermont? Well, Have no fear The Race To The Top Of Vermont is a 4.3 mile hill climb for hikers, runners, and mountain bikers up Stowe Mountain Resort's Auto Toll Road and the highest mountain in Vermont, Mt. Mansfield. The event is one of the Catamount Trail Association's biggest fundraisers.

That same weekend Mountain Bike Vermont (MTBVT) has officially launched Green Mountain Showdown, the first photo competition in the state dedicated to all facets of mountain biking, from singletrack to downhill to jumping.
The Green Mountain Showdown is an opportunity for Northeastern photographers to showcase their talents. Five lucky photographers have been selected by our judging panel and will have until August 27, 2011, to collect a portfolio of work based on the theme “Bike Culture in the Green Mountains.” The evening gala will begin at 5:30pm near the Outdoor Center at Trapps and riders of all ages are encouraged to gather for an evening of great pictures, a BBQ, fine ales and live music. Tickets are $25.00 for the event or $40.00 for the event plus a fantastic meal, and they include entry to the evening gala and a day ticket to the Trapp’s trail network. Proceeds will support VMBA and the expansion of the Adams Camp trail project.

Don't forget there is still a few weeks left of Summer Camp and Summer Attractions! Summer Camp runs through September 3rd! The kids will explore nature at its best…from hikes up Mt. Mansfield and Spruce Peak; to “extreme streaming”; to testing their skill on our low ropes course, campers are sure to be challenged. Campers will also spend a day on the attractions (bungee trampoline, climbing wall, alpine slide and more) at Spruce Peak. Yes parents…they take the kids to the attractions so you don’t have to. There will be arts & crafts, swimming and hanging out at base camp with new friends.

Summer Attractions are open 7 days a week through September 5th and then weekends until October 16th! You don't want to miss one last Alpine Slide Ride or day on the bungee jump! Or the beautiful views from the Gondola during leaf peeping season!

Stowe Bike Path:

Stowe's bike path is as an all year round recreational trail. You can bike, hike, stroll, and ski on it, 365 days a year. The 5.3-mile paved trail starts in Stowe Village, next to the Stowe Congregational church, winds its way through the woods and meadows, and crosses the West Branch River 11 times on arched wooden bridges. Numerous shops, lodges, and restaurants are accessible from the path. Biking around Stowe is one of the more overlooked activities on a summer vacation. But with several places that do bike rentals and bike path it is a great way for some exercise and to see the town.

Taste of Stowe Arts Festival:

The Taste of Stowe Arts Festival is an unusual event combining a market for handmade crafts, original art, music, and an array of gourmet edible treats

The Art and Craft Tent is full of creativity. Come on out and see the extraordinary items artists have made just for you: birdbaths and marble patio tables, end tables, pitchers, mugs, plates galore, hand painted clothing, furniture, sparkling jewelry, leather purses and bags, photography, original paintings, leather work, wall sculptures, exotic dark chocolates, handmade dog treats, and more.

With 150 boutiques you will get to meet the actual artists who are selling their work. Come to listen to their stories and learn more about them while making over your home, office, garden, or patio, all while supporting local handcrafted products!

Everyday of the Festival has a different theme:

Summer is in full swing now here at Stowe after July 4th. We had a great extravaganza and fun filled weekend.

Now with my parents living in Nashville, I have learned a bit about country music and Honky Tonk; little did I expect it to be coming here to Stowe, this summer. But boy was I wrong.

What is Honky Tonk, you might be wondering… Honky Tonk, is old-school country music played in little bars and roadhouses all around the country with guitars, fiddles, and the lonesome sound of a pedal steel, supporting singers who weave tales of good times and bad behavior to a rollicking back beat.

And now we are excited to welcome the Grand Ol’ Honky Tonk at Spruce Peak hosted by Brett Hughes! These evenings are sure to be a great night of music and dancing! The Grand Ol’ Honky Tonk at Spruce Peak will be a series of shows, once a month this summer.

Brett Hughes has been hosting his weekly Honky Tonk Tuesday sessions for five and half years at Burlington’s Radio Bean, and in that time has been joined by well over a hundred musicians, singing and playing the best of the classic old-time country songs.

After talking with Brett about the upcoming show, I am totally psyched for the music and dancing and good times up at SPPAC. He has so much energy and enthusiasm about his music and performances, all Brett really wants is for others to truly enjoy themselves at each show and if they end up liking his style music great and if not he hopes they enjoyed and fun and entertaining show.

We hope to see you on Wednesday July 27th at 7pm! A $12 general admission ticket gets you in for a night of amazing music, maybe some dancin’, and a whole lot of fun!

Love Letters!

Love Letters, the popular Pulitzer Prize-nominated comedy/drama by A.R. Gurney will be performed live on stage at the Spruce Peak Performing Arts Center this Friday and Saturday, July 15 & 16 at 8 pm starring Lorenzo Lamas and Charlene Tilton. Take a good story. Add two interesting characters. Then take away all the typical theater effects. What do you have? Love Letters, the popular and moving play by A.R. Gurney, is about a fifty year love affair carried on primarily through letters, written in and about a world where letter-writing was very much an essential mode of communication, especially between men and women.

The play centers on just two characters, Melissa Gardner (played by Charlene Tilton) and Andrew Makepeace Ladd III (played by Lorenzo Lamas). Using the realism of epistolary form, they sit side by side at tables and read the notes, letters and cards that span nearly 50 years. The characters discuss their hopes and ambitions, dreams and disappointments, victories and defeats – that have passed between them throughout their separated lives.

Kids (4-6 yr old) Summer Mountain Adventure

Club Mondays: Join the club while we make friends and play on the practice facility at Stowe Country Club. We’ll pretend we are pros, putting and chipping like we’re in the big leagues. We will return to camp for lunch then on to search areas surrounding the Cross Country Center for the perfect place to build a Club House, including our network of trails, streams, and wooded spaces.

Tie Dye & Treasure Tuesdays: Take to the trails on a Scavenger Hunt/Geo Caching Adventure to discover an abundant array of Mother Nature’s many treasures. Bring a treasure to leave in the Geo Cache box and pick a treasure from the box to call your own. Return to camp for lunch and an afternoon of tie-dying. Tie-dye your camp T-shirt or bring along something of your own to splash with color. Cool off at day’s end with a swim at the pool or a dip in one of Stowe Mountain Resort’s natural swimming spots.

Wet & Wild Wednesdays: Wander into the wild to explore the rivers and streams of the Stowe Mountain Resort base areas. Look for water creatures and native plant-life. Be sure to bring your water shoes in order to experience what ‘extreme streaming’ is all about. Head back to Camp for a picnic lunch and an afternoon scrambling on the boulders around Camp and a tasty ‘destination dessert.’

Travel, Trampoline and Tumble Thursdays: Take a trip to the Summer Attractions on Spruce Peak at Stowe for a morning of fun. Harness up for a jump on the bungee trampoline, ring the bell on the Climbing Wall (height/weight minimum), or travel down the mountain on the Alpine Slide. Back to base camp for an afternoon BBQ; then cool of with a yummy Ice Cream Sundae you create and maybe even a dip in the pool.

Find your way to the Top Fridays: Bring your hiking shoes and find your way with friends on a fun voyage to the top of Stowe’s very own Mount Mansfield or Spruce Peak. We’ll head to the hills, look for wildlife flying high, pack a snack, and search for a sweet spot to take in the view. Munch on a picnic lunch followed by face painting; Arts & crafts; and field games back at Camp.

Sight-Seeing and Sundae Saturdays: Set out to explore Stowe Mountain Resort’s secret spots, exploring areas and environments off the beaten-path. Enjoy a picnic lunch and an afternoon filled with Field Games including Disc Golf on our ever changing course, expanded Obstacle and Low-Ropes challenges. Finish off your day with a make-your-own ice cream sundae treat.

Mountain Adventure (7-12 yr old)

Club Mondays: We will spend the morning exploring nature in the cross country trails. We'll then come back to base camp for a pizza lunch. Accomplished golfer, Jim Doykos, will lead the Mountain Adventure kids in an afternoon spent at the Stowe Country Club practice facility, chipping, putting, and working on your bunker skills.

Top Roping and Tie Dye Tuesdays: Mountain Adventure kids will explore the boulders and rocks of Stowe Mountain Resort to learn the basics of Top Roping/Belaying. Lead by climbing experts Mark Aiken and Nate Gardner, kids will experience the thrill of going vertical on the rock with ropes, biners and harnesses. After a robust morning, lunch will be waiting at base camp, followed by an afternoon Tie-Dying your camp T-shirt and cooling off with a swim at the pool or a dip in one of our natural swimming holes.

Hit the Trail Wednesdays: Join Jim and Nate for a full day hiking adventure! We will access numerous hiking trails with significant vertical on Mt. Mansfield and Spruce Peak. You are in for a challenge. Jim and Nate have a wealth of experience in hiking/mountaineering and can’t wait to share the fun.

Attraction Thursdays: Take a trip to the summer attractions on Spruce Peak for a morning of fun on the Alpine Slide, Bungee Jump and Climbing Wall. We’ll munch a delicious barbeque lunch; then back to the attractions for more excitement! Refresh with a swim, then back to base camp to make your own ice cream sundaes.

Field Fridays: Take a hike thru the fields of the cross country center in search of the Geo Cache treasure box. Using compasses and a GPS system we’ll learn to navigate to a new Geo Cache location each week. Bring a treasure from home to leave your mark in the Geo Cache Box and choose a treasure for your own. Then back to camp for lunch. In the afternoon join in the field day fun. We’ll be playing Disc Golf or whiffle ball; learn to serve, set, and spike with volleyball; pass, dribble, and score in soccer. And if there is still time, we’ll fit in a dip at the pool.

Wilderness Exploration Saturdays: Set out on a hike around Stowe Mountain Resort to explore our peaks and tremendous views. In the afternoon Challenge yourself and others on our expanded obstacle and low-ropes courses. If there is time we’ll chill out with a swim at a local swimming spot, and then finish off the day with a make-your-own ice cream sundae treat.

And of course once again don't forget about the Farmer's Market's beginning tomorrow! See you there!

The time has come when the rain goes away and everything blossoms into a beautiful green goodness and I have a day off from work to go play outside. Monday I went bouldering in the morning in the notch and then hiked up to the nose beginning on the Haselton Trail. The rocks have begun to dry out the the trail are no longer flowing rivers and a beautiful sunny day = grand adventure. Check out my pictures from yesterday.

When you come to Stowe next and are looking for a great hike on Mansfield I would recommend Haselton, it is nice and shaded and you are hiking in the woods in the middle of the ski resort and except for crossing a ski trail and arriving at the top of a few, you completely forget that this woods section is in the middle of everything.

This is the perfect time of year for an adventure, challenge yourself to see how many activities you can do in one day! I only bouldered and hiked Monday, how many can you do? There is still swimming, road biking, mountain biking, running, etc.

Big Bad VooDoo Daddy Concert

Last Saturday night I got the pleasure of rocking out to Big Bad VooDoo Daddy at the Spruce Peak Performing Arts Center Concert! It was an amazing show with the audience dancing in their seats and at the end of the show dancing in next to their chairs. The show was extremely interactive and with a full audience there was energy everywhere. Next time you are up this way and at the resort you should take some time and come to see a show! The Vermont Ski Museum located in downtown Stowe has some big news... A name change! They will now be known as the Vermont Ski & Snowboard Museum. Recognizing the roots of snowboarding and how it grew in the state of Vermont.

If you have not had a chance to check it out yet make plenty of time for it in your next vacation as the rich history of skiing and snowboarding in Vermont and Stowe came alive. The museum is filled with great stories, photographs and old equipment, one could marvel at for hours.

Route 108

Vermont Route 108 is a north–south state highway that begins in downtown Stowe and ends at the Canadian boarder in a town called Franklin.

VT 108 passes through the Mount Mansfield State Forest. The road is very steep and turning, makes for great skiing in the winter when the road is closed. But now that the road is open again, there is a whole world of possibilities for fun outdoor activities until it closes again in October after the first snowfall.

Along the road, there are small parking areas where rock climbing and hiking are very accessible and many road cyclists take the steep incline as a challenge and pedal up the road. Surrounded by streams in the heart of the green mountains Route 108 is one of the best roads, in my opinion, in Vermont for outdoor adventures. Located next to Mount Mansfield, the weather can change instantly and it is always colder than you expect it is going to be. I always advise packing/ wearing warmer clothing while playing in the woods off of 108.

I hope everyone gets a chance this summer to drive Rt 108, The Notch Rd, and explore the boulder fields, rock climb, hike or find a local swimming hole alongside to have fun in!

Sun is Shining

The sun has finally started to shine again up here in Vermont and the snow is slowly been melting away. A few of the diehards have been hiking to make a few more turns, but many people are waiting around for the mountain biking trails to dry out and are road riding to pass the time. Me, I moved, visited my grandmother in Newport, RI, and now I am enjoying all of the sun we have in the forecast for the rest of the week. For me it is perfect for marathon training. (I am running the Kay Bank Vermont City Marathon in Burlington on May 29th, feel free to come cheer me on!)

Looking to the future The Stowe Country Club is opening on Saturday May 14th!!! Everybody get your clubs ready its golf season!

But for now I am enjoying the sun in town!

Bacon Brothers Concert Review

Walking up to Spruce Peak Performing Arts Center I had no idea where my tickets were going to be, all I knew was that I was going to see the Bacon Brothers LIVE! And I was pretty excited.

David Rowell, the Executive Director at SPPAC began the show welcoming everyone and announcing that the center has now been open for 13 weeks and will be phasing into Act II as the summer approaches. It has been very successful thus far and David as well as myself are looking forward to all of the upcoming acts.

I ended up sitting second row center and felt like Kevin Bacon was looking at me directly!

The show was a big success; the audience was very into the show cheering, singing and dancing along in their chairs. I thoroughly enjoyed such a close up view of everything especially Kevin Bacon’s butt ;-) I also must admit that in the beginning I wanted to see then burst out and begin singing Footloose, but I knew better and sat back to relax.

Kevin played a whole variety of instruments from guitars, tambourines, harmonica, and drum all while dancing and singing though the show. Michael played the guitar and a beautiful carbon fiber cello while dazzling the audience. The rest of the band was very animated and seemed to be having lots of fun.

My favorite song of the night was New Year’s Day. The band came together rocking out while having so much fun!

Incase you missed seeing them at the Spruce Peak Performing Arts Center but see the touring elsewhere go and enjoy the show!

Day 115: Making some turns after the Easter Sunrise service.

I hope everyone enjoyed the sunrise service as much as I did. Having tried to stay up all night, I got only 45 minutes of sleep, but it was worth it. It was a little clouded over at the very top but as you skied down the views were stunning.

Sunday morning's turns made it day 115 for me this season. Nothing beats being up early in the outdoors on the side of a mountain in order to ski down with at least a hundred other people who want to do the same. There was several hundred people at the service and us diehard skiers loved every single turn to the bottom. It was sad to have to end after just one run, I would have stayed and skied all day long or until I got hungry.

Sunrise Service & Easter Egg Hunt
Sunday, April 24
Stowe’s 57th annual non-denominational Easter Sunrise Service will be held as always at the Cliff House atop Mt. Mansfield. Complimentary Gondola transportation is available to the public from 4:30am – 5:25am and will end promptly at 5:25am so please allow for extra time to park and walk to the Gondola Barn before 5:25am. Dress warmly and for mountain conditions. An Easter Egg Hunt & Earth Day Presentation will occur in Spruce Plaza at 9am.

In the event of bad weather the Easter Sunrise Service will move to the Midway Base Lodge.

Participants will be able to ski or ride down from the top of the Gondola if the Easter Sunrise service is held atop.

ALSO.. The BACON BROTHERS LIVE!!!

On Saturday, April 30, Stowe Mountain Resort will host The Bacon Brothers live in concert. The celebrated siblings and their stellar band mates will perform songs off their numerous albums including the latest release ‘New Years Day.’ The performance will take place at 8:00pm in the new Spruce Peak Performing Arts Center. One Last Quad Ride... in case you missed it

Hey everyone!

Yesterday, was closing day for the resort and the last day ever for the four runner quad. It began as a rainy morning and then the clouds and rain cleared up for slightly nicer conditions. I chose to ski early in the morning so I endured a soaking wet ride up the quad. But it was worth being a little bit wet, because the conditions were not bad for April 17th and raining.

Just in case you did not make closing day here is a video I shot of one of my rides up this morning. Sorry about the rain on the lens at the end, I got cold hands!

610 hours later, the ski school season is over. It is bitter sweet and I can't wait until next year, but there is nothing like knowing I don't have to stand in my ski boots all day long. :-)

Spring Has Sprung

If you like sun then you'll love all of the weather we have been having, especially today. Another beautiful day of April skiing & riding with bluebird skies, soft snow, and warming temperatures. You should all be packing your bags now to enjoy it.

I was busy perfecting my tan today while teaching. Well, I guess if I don't tan it is not really a tan. More or less I was perfecting my freckles/sun-kissed look.

But the bottom line is that it's beautiful and YOU need to come to STOWE! - Megan

Powder Day!

107, that is how many days I have skied so far this season. This is the most I have ever skied in one season, and while it is a lot, it is also very rewarding. As spring time approaches, most people are now thinking beaches, summer, and sun, and Stowe has still gotten snow every single day this month! Yup, today was a powder day! It has been endless, and we all feel very fortunate that the skiing is still so good.

This past weekend my friend and I realized we did not have many pictures of ourselves skiing, and we went out after work to obtain pictures some. And it was a successful mission. But it made me think for the past 100-plus days I have been so focused on skiing I was documenting memories internally and not externally through photographs. This is strange because I love photography and pictures. Some people stop every 5 seconds to take an image, and it took me months to pause and take a few pictures. I find that pictures are great reminders of those wild and crazy adventures with friends.

Other than the powder we have been getting, the big news is the big “C” word… the scheduled closing day is April 17th, but with all of this snow even if the mountain closes, I believe there will be a lot of hiking in the future to make those turns.

Ski Bum Prom

Last night was the sixth annual Ski Bum Prom, a 1950s sock hop, which took place at the Matterhorn
The event include a raffle and American Bandstand dance contest ( I made it to the finals and came in third! Not bad for wearing 4 inch heels!)

All proceeds went to benefit Stowe Adaptive Sports, a local nonprofit that supports skiers and snowboarders with disabilities. For more information: adapt@smartscience.org.

Night Skiing

Have you ever considered hiking up a mountain, at night, in the middle of winter, wearing ski or snowboard boots, while carrying the rest of your equipment in a pack? Boot packing the whole way up and skiing by headlamp on the way down. If you haven’t, then you are probably aren’t as crazy as my friends and me.

Night skiing, though trees, in the backcountry by headlamp is one of those rare experiences I’m glad I got to share with my friends. Now this adventure is not for the inexperienced or novice skier. Our group included four Wilderness First Responders, each with their own med kit and two leaders who have led this hike over ten times this season.

What is it like to ski at night through trees and along trails guided just by headlamps? It’s great! Of course, the pace is slower due to darkness and the need to keep the group together with frequent check-ins, but it’s an experience like never before, forcing you to go outside of your comfort zone, face your fears and trust your friends but most of all, let loose and trust yourself. There are frequent whoops of joy from the woods and those help guide you down but when you let one out it is an invigorating experience of YES, I can do this!

If you are not ready for a night skiing experience I believe the next best thing is hiking along Route 108, where it is closed, into the notch and enjoying the views, the stars and the way the lights look in town. It is also a really unique experience to look down and see these giant lights looming on the mountain and figuring out which trail is currently being groomed.

Beth's first day at Stowe

Well folks, we welcomed spring with some beautiful bluebird days and spring skiing. And as I mentioned we also welcomed spring with SNOW! Yup, that’s right we got about 10” of the fresh stuff Tuesday. The trails and glades have a new life to them, and it is just what we needed mixed with colder days to make it last longer to keep the season going long and strong.

Today I skied with my sister Beth for the 1st real time. Yup, that’s right, she is in her third season, and I finally got a chance to ski with her. Beth cut her college classes today to come ski at Stowe for the first time ever and she LOVED it! I pushed her a bit out of her comfort zone and it paid off. It began as a beautiful bluebird day, then some clouds rolled through, but the skiing was fun! We started the morning off on the gondola, moved to the quad, then Spruce. We had a delicious lunch at the Great Room Grill and skied Spruce a bit more then it was back to the gondola to finish off the day. All in all we took about ten runs and just enjoyed today’s beauty.

Today I was skiing on a demo pair of skis from Skier Shop. They were the Soctt Rosa in a 158, and I really liked them. They were a lot of fun and responded well to what I asked of them. I think the best way to find a ski you love is to try out as many as possible first and that has been my goal so far this season. I will keep you posted on other skis I try out!

There is some snow in the forecast so tune up the skis again, winter is defiantly not over!

Welcome to Spring!

My question to you is WHY are you sitting home reading this and not up here in Stowe skiing? We have had several fabulous, bluebird, spring days this week, and now we are expecting more SNOW! That’s right we welcome spring with another potential snowstorm in the next few days. So jump off of your couches and pack the car or your travel bags, and get your butts to Stowe!

I really should be keeping all of this information to myself and being greedy and not sharing how much fun I have had the past several days, but I guess I will let you in on this secret, I have had so much fun, you can tell from my slightly sunburnt face. Yup, that’s right the pale Irish skinned girl forgot to wear sunscreen on St. Patrick’s Day, and now I am just using it as an excuse to perfect my goggle/ sunglass tan, which is very hard for me to get due to being fair skinned.

So St. Patrick’s Day was my day off and it was a BEAUTIFUL, bluebird, spring skiing day. I began the day on Goat and Starr and worked my way all over Mansfield and Spruce. I ended up meeting up with six of the guys from ski school and we had a blast tearing it up off the gondola for the last few runs of the day. For our very last run the boys decided to ski shirtless, since it was warm enough, and they attracted a lot of attention from other skiers wanting photographs. I was not the only one trying to take their picture. I hope you guys find these images and funny as I do!

Other than that I have been teaching and soaking up the sun every moment I can. I hope to see you all here soon!

Greetings Stowe Lovers!

We have had some great blue bird spring skiing so far this week and conditions for the weekend look promising with a few chances of snow over the next few days! I am looking forward to the rest of spring and more spring skiing, but I’m also praying for another 3 foot storm.

Tonight, Wednesday, is the last torchlight parade of the season. At 8pm, Ski and Snowboard School instructors will ski and ride down Slalom Hill on Spruce with torches. The parade will be followed by fireworks. It’s a great event for everyone to experience.

Thursday is Saint Patrick’s Day, and in honor of that we have $39 lift tickets.

Saturday is the East Coast Super Shootout. Five Photographer Finalists and their athlete teams (skiers & riders) battle it out for the "Best in Show" Award presenting their action sports photography slideshows in a public presentation on Saturday March 19 at 7pm. Each team has three days to shoot at Stowe Mountain Resort and make a presentation of these photos in slideshows to original music. Attendees get to select the People's Choice Award.

Greetings! My name is Megan and I am your guide for everything Stowe. Right now, we are celebrating another fresh snowfall -- at least 24-28 inches on the mountain. There has been some turbulent weather over the last few days – some rain, some wind and then lots of snow. The skiing and riding are epic and we are anticipating at least one more storm in the forecast this week. All the other snow enthusiasts and I are gearing up for a great month of skiing.

I will be sharing my adventures in the greater Stowe area because this is one of the most beautiful places year round. These mountains and valleys have so much character, though most people never fully realize its excellence until they live here. While everyone knows about winter sports, such as skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, and ice climbing, there are so many other interesting things happening on and off the mountain. Each season offers so many opportunities for adventure from rock climbing, hiking and cycling to more relaxed activities such as dining, store browsing, and relaxing.

Just in case you were wondering, I came to Vermont 5 years ago, and I have fallen in love with this cool northern state. As a first season Ski instructor with ski and snowboard school here at Stowe Mountain Resort, I am learning so much about the mountain while I am teaching young children how to ski. During some of my off-ski hours, I also work as a sales associate at a local ski shop. So please join me each week while I share an insiders view of Stowe, Vermont. - Megan

Stowe Mountain Resort - ROAD TRIP

Stowe Mountain Resort has been on the road in several different cities, states and countries promoting our fine resort the last month.

We started in Fort Lauderdale where we met all the Easterner's who moved South because of the cold and who want to come back to remember why they left in the first place.

Then we headed to what seems like the second best ski show in the East, the Toronto Ski Show. Stowe Mountain Resort had a lot of interest from the Canadians who are willing to drive to our resort 7 1/2hours to take their vacations. Of course, this great excitement may have had to do with the Canadian dollar being very favorable against the US Dollar. Any takers this time for Canadian at par? (please note; this is not a solicitation for Canadian money at par)

Next we headed over the pond to the Scotland and London Ski Shows. Both shows were busy and Stowe Mountain Resort continues to be a lead destination resort in the UK.

Back over the Pond, we headed up to Ottawa, Ontario Canada where the trend from the Toronto Ski Show was still in effect. Look out Stowe, the Canadians are coming!!!!!

Stowe Mountain Resort's International Sales Coordinator plays Fenway Park

I am a US Army Musician in "Vermont's Own" 40th Army Band. On June 12, 2010 we were chosen to play the National Anthem at Fenway Park in front of 38,000 crazy Red Sox fans. I had only been to this famous baseball field once in my life! Now, I had the chance to stand on a field where legends in Baseball have set foot. We were introduced as representing 3000 National Guard members from New England serving in Afghanistan. I stood at attention, my knees trembled and shivers shot down my spine. At that point, I realized where I was and why I was there. My knees trembled not because I was playing in the band or standing on a famous baseball field. It was because the notes that resonated out of my trumpet represented all of the courageous men and women deployed overseas and their families.

I will probably never have this amazing opportunity again in my lifetime and it is a story I will tell my grand children. So for all of you Red Sox fans out there, I want to thank you for giving me these amazing 90 seconds of playing time on your field; it really was an incredible experience.

Opening Day at the Summer Attractions

I really like opening day of the resort [in summer and winter]. The change of season, weather and operations are inspiring. The shades of green on the mountain IMHO are as beautiful as the fall colors. And to see the guests arrive is a great feeling. It takes literally hundreds of staffers to stage this show and when the weather cooperates, it's just fun. Today has been perfect as the pics we'll post later will testify. Thanks to all who came out on such a great day.

We opened the summer season today with free Summer Attractions Passes for any and all immediate family members of deployed Vermont National Guard members. We'll be taking family photos and videos that their loved ones will be able to see from where ever in the world they are serving.

I would also like to thank all of our military men and women for their service. Be safe and get back to Vermont as soon as possible!

It's Not Easy Being Green, but it's Worth It!

Suzi Zakowski from Audubon International paid us a site visit yesterday as part of our 'Sustainable Community' status.

Stowe Mountain Resort earned the Sustainable Community Certification from Audubon International this past March, becoming the first mountain resort in the U.S. to merit the environmental achievement. Members of Audubon International’s Sustainable Communities Program are eligible for certification, which recognizes dedication to the process of becoming a more sustainable community and beginning to act on a sustainability plan. The plan covers 15 focus areas, and members must choose timelines and measurable goals. Once progress is documented, members become certified.

I had the pleasure of representing Stowe at the Discover Jazz Festival last week. We had a booth set up for the Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings show handing out Stowe Points Cards and discounted summer attractions vouchers. At all of my events I have tons of giveaways, so make sure you know where we’re going and show up! The show started with a band called Bearquarium, which rocked the house and really got the crowed warmed up. All acoustic, Bearquarium is definitely my kind of music. Vermont seems to produce some awesome jazz/funk/etc… bands. As the sun set over Champlain Sharon Jones started wailing and didn’t stop well into the night.

Literally, from her first note until her last, the energy was incredible. I think she had the speakers turned up to eleven.

Not really but Stowe Mountain Resort attended the Ohio Valley Ski Council Summit this past weekend. It is amazing how many people come to Stowe Mountain Resort from all over the United States and the World. This past weekend it was Dayton, Ohio's turn to tell us why they love coming to Stowe Mountain Resort. A few key words that we took away from this great event were, breath-taking beauty, quintessential New England, great food, great skiing and the best one, FUN!

Wow what a great weekend I experienced of listening to live music. Really made me realize how amazing Burlington VT's venues really are...Nothing like jamming out on a nice day with great friends!

All in one weekend I was lucky enough to see a blue grass festival at Shelburne Museum which included Alison Krauss and Union Station..What a voice she has and what a venue that is! Great crowd of people (all ages), nice and mellow. Always wanted to see her and now I have!

Next on the agenda was Michael Franti & Spearhead at the Champlain Valley Fair Grounds on Saturday night. One of my most favorite bands ever and to see them live is really AMAZING! A great vibe and music to boot. Franti ended the show with "Say Hey" and pulled every child in the crowd up on stage! Was really cool to see him interact with the kids and to listen to 10 year olds sing every lyric to the song!

Now I get to enjoy Jazz Fest all week/weekend in Burlington VT! Wow! Jazz Fest is an annual week June 4-13 of live music in various locations throughout Burlington (including the Waterfront Park). This year Stowe will be sponsoring Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings Thursday June 10th at 6pm on the Waterfront Park. It's going to be an insane show! I hope that you all get to enjoy Jazz Week in Burlington, it's definitely a sight to see.

Time to get in shape

This past weekend I was at the Vermont City Marathon where I was part of the Stowe Mountain Resort booth set up at the registration expo. It really made me think that I need to get back into shape. It seems like in Vermont we go from being in super shape for ski season to super shape for watching the snow melt. I was lucky enough to be sharing booth space with the folks from the Catamount Trail Association to help promote the Race to the Top of Vermont which will be held at Stowe Mountain Resort's Toll Road at the end of August. Seeing all of the crazy marathoners has motivated me to at least contemplate doing the Race to the Top of Vermont. I guess I’ll have to see how my training regiment progresses through the summer.

Chasing Waterfalls

It's damp out there! We need it or at least my friends' gardens do. A little rain can create the perfect day to grab a cup of Joe for the road (perhaps from the Green Goddess in the lower village) and search for waterfalls along Rte 108. A few spots can be admired right from your car. Foster's Swimming Hole for one, an emerald pool with a small waterfall feature is located on the lower part of Notchbrook Road. For the more adventurous, hike a short distance from the roadside to find Bingham Falls. I didn't post a picture, you'll have to see for yourself.

I never know who I will bump into exploring Stowe Mountain Resort. It could be a die hard athlete running up a steep trail; friends from out of town at the Cliff House Restaurant or this little guy slogging across my path. No matter who or what I bump into; I always want to know what lead them there and where they are going?

What's not to Love?

I had the most amazing morning. My commute involves a bit of driving and this morning there were significant clouds along with a few early morning breaks of sun. This was in the 6:30-7a drive time. Having some knowledge of the resort and weather, I knew the clouds were in the lower valley. I opened my office [the laptop takes a while to wake up...another story] and headed up to the Stowe Mountain Club golf course. As expected, it was sunny and warm with still air. I grabbed a cart and headed up with camera in hand and took some amazing photos which made it to http://www.stowe.com/ by 8:30a. Yep - another rough start to my work day and no - I did not golf this morning.
